Overview
Waxed thread is the material that turns two needles and a row of holes into a saddle stitch. The wax coating makes the thread grip inside the hole, helps the two strands lock against each other, and protects the fibre from the abrasion of daily use.
Linen is the traditional choice and swells slightly with wax to fill the hole, giving the classic hand-sewn look. Nylon and polyester are stronger and more rot resistant, which suits outdoor gear, straps and anything that will get wet. Diameter must suit the hole size: around 0.6 mm is a safe general choice.
Choose a colour that either matches the leather for a discreet seam or contrasts deliberately for a decorative one. Keep the spool clean and cut fresh lengths rather than reusing frayed thread.
Safety
No sharp edge or chemical hazard is intrinsic to this item. Usual workshop care still applies — keep the bench clear and your hands behind the edge.
How to use it well
- Cut a length about four times the seam so you are not constantly rethreading.
- Match thread diameter to the chisel pitch so the stitch fills the hole neatly.
- Wax a fresh length again if it starts to feel dry and slips in the hole.
- Contrast the thread colour only when the stitch line is straight and even.
Compatible leathers and materials
Waxed Thread is suited to the following leather types. Anything outside this list is worth testing on an offcut first.
