Overview

A polishing cloth is a soft, lint-free cloth used to buff finish to a shine and to wipe away excess dye or wax. Cotton flannel is the usual choice because it is gentle on the surface and leaves no fibres behind.

After the finish has dried you buff the piece briskly with the cloth to bring up the sheen and even out the coat. The same cloth clears stray dye from a tooled surface and polishes hardware before the piece is packed away.

Keep several cloths and separate them by task. A cloth used for dye will hold colour and should not be used to buff a natural piece.

Safety

No sharp edge or chemical hazard is intrinsic to this item. Usual workshop care still applies — keep the bench clear and your hands behind the edge.

How to use it well

  • Buff briskly once the finish is dry to even out the sheen.
  • Keep a separate cloth for dye so colour is not transferred.
  • Wash the cloths without fabric softener to keep them absorbent.
  • Fold the cloth so you always have a clean face to work with.
