Overview
A D-ring is a half-round metal loop with one straight side and one curved side. The straight side is captured in a leather loop, and the curved side takes a strap, clip or buckle. It is a simple way to make a connection point that can pivot.
You sew or rivet a leather loop around the straight bar, then run a strap or a clip through the curved part. D-rings are common on bag handles, shoulder straps and adjustable closures where the strap needs to fold back on itself.
Choose a ring wide enough for the strap it must take, usually 20 mm to 30 mm inner width, and a wire gauge heavy enough for the load. Brass and nickel are the usual finishes.
Safety
No sharp edge or chemical hazard is intrinsic to this item. Usual workshop care still applies — keep the bench clear and your hands behind the edge.
How to use it well
- Size the ring to the strap so the leather does not bunch at the loop.
- Reinforce the loop with a rivet or a second stitch line for heavy loads.
- Orient the flat bar against the leather so the ring hangs freely.
- Check the wire gauge before trusting a ring with a heavy bag.
Compatible leathers and materials
D-Rings is suited to the following leather types. Anything outside this list is worth testing on an offcut first.
