Dye & Finish Calculator
Estimate dye and finish volume, drying time and recoat interval for a given area.
This calculator estimates how much dye and finish a project needs, plus how long it will take to dry. It uses the leather area, the leather type, the dye type, the number of coats and the workshop conditions to give volumes, a drying time and a recoat interval.
Dye required

dye = area x coverage rate x coats; finish = area x finish rate x coats
Assumptions
- Coverage rates are approximate; a thirsty veg-tan will drink more dye than a sealed chrome-tan.
- Warm, dry conditions shorten drying time, while cool or humid air lengthens it considerably.
- Buy about 10 percent extra of both dye and finish so you do not run short midway through a coat.
How to use the result
Treat the number as a floor, not a target. Buy to the next sensible size up, and keep the offcuts — small pieces are what you learn on. Every figure here is an estimate based on typical workshop practice.
Chemicals. Dye and finish volumes are estimates only. Read the product safety data sheet before you open the tin, and work with ventilation and gloves.
