Overview

Edge paint is a coloured coating applied to a beveled edge to seal and finish it without burnishing. It is the standard finish on chrome-tan and on any leather whose fibres will not burnish to a shine, and it lets you colour the edge independently of the face.

You apply thin coats with a roller, pen or fine brush, letting each coat dry before the next. Two or three coats give a smooth, sealed edge that resists water and wear. The result is a crisp painted line, quite different from the soft roll of a burnished veg-tan edge.

Choose a water-based paint for easier cleanup and lower odour, and keep the coats thin so the edge stays smooth rather than lumpy.

Safety

Hazard. The pigment stains skin and clothing permanently; wear nitrile gloves and work in a ventilated space.

How to use it well

  • Apply several thin coats rather than one thick one for a smooth edge.
  • Let each coat dry fully before adding the next.
  • Use a roller or fine pen for a crisp line on small pieces.
  • Sand lightly between coats if the edge feels rough.
