Overview

A snap fastener, or press stud, is a two-part closure with a male and female half that press together and pull apart. It lets a flap or strap open and close repeatedly, which a rivet cannot do because a rivet is permanent.

You set the four pieces with an anvil and setter, one half on each side of the leather. Placement matters: the two halves must line up exactly or the snap will not close cleanly. Mark and punch both sides before setting anything.

Choose a cap diameter that suits the scale of the piece, usually 12 mm to 15 mm. Nickel and brass are the common finishes, and the setting tool must match the cap size.

Safety

Hazard. The anvil and setter can slip under the mallet; place them on a firm mat and strike squarely.

How to use it well

  • Mark and punch both halves together so they line up exactly.
  • Test the alignment with the loose parts before setting anything.
  • Use the setter that matches the cap size for a clean seat.
  • Reinforce the leather behind a snap that will see frequent use.
