Overview
A canvas burnisher is simply a strip of tightly woven cotton canvas, folded and pulled briskly along a waxed edge. The friction melts the wax into the fibres and polishes the edge to a hard, smooth finish.
It is the final hand step of traditional edge finishing on veg-tan. After beveling, slicking and applying a little wax, you grip the canvas over the edge and pull with speed until the edge turns glossy. It is cheap, forgiving and surprisingly effective.
Choose a close, lint-free weave and keep the strip clean. A dirty canvas will transfer grit into the edge and scratch it.
Safety
No sharp edge or chemical hazard is intrinsic to this item. Usual workshop care still applies — keep the bench clear and your hands behind the edge.
How to use it well
- Apply a little wax before pulling so the friction has something to melt.
- Grip the canvas over the edge and pull fast to build heat.
- Keep the strip clean so grit does not scratch the finished edge.
- Work in short sections and check the shine as you go.
Compatible leathers and materials
Canvas Burnisher is suited to the following leather types. Anything outside this list is worth testing on an offcut first.
