Overview

An edge slicker is a hardwood or plastic stick with one or more grooves cut into it. You dampen the edge, then rub the groove along it to compress the fibres and start the burnishing process that produces a smooth, sealed edge.

The groove must match the edge thickness. Too wide and the wood does not contact the leather, too narrow and it digs in. Most slickers carry several grooves so one tool covers a range of thicknesses. Wood and bone give a warm, gentle burnish, while plastic is cheap and durable.

Slicking is the middle step of edge finishing, after beveling and before the final friction polish with canvas or glass.

Safety

No sharp edge or chemical hazard is intrinsic to this item. Usual workshop care still applies — keep the bench clear and your hands behind the edge.

How to use it well

  • Dampen the edge lightly with water or saliva before rubbing.
  • Choose the groove that just cradles the edge for the best contact.
  • Rub with firm, fast strokes to build friction and heat.
  • Follow with a canvas or glass burnisher for the final shine.
