Leather Yield Calculator

Estimate how much leather a set of pattern pieces needs, with waste and grain direction.

This calculator answers one question: how much leather do I need to buy for a given set of pattern pieces. It takes the size of one repeated piece, the sheet you plan to buy, the grain direction and a waste allowance, then estimates the area required, the pieces a sheet can yield and the leftover offcut.

Assumptions

  • The estimate assumes rectangular pieces cut without nesting; real nesting can improve the yield.
  • Grain direction is treated as a constraint, so pieces that must run along the spine may waste more.
  • Buy about 10 percent more than the calculator reports to cover flaws, stretch and a cutting mistake.

How to use the result

Treat the number as a floor, not a target. Buy to the next sensible size up, and keep the offcuts — small pieces are what you learn on. Every figure here is an estimate based on typical workshop practice.

Chemicals. Dye and finish volumes are estimates only. Read the product safety data sheet before you open the tin, and work with ventilation and gloves.
