Overview

A dauber is a small pad of wool or foam on a handle, used to apply dye and finish in an even coat. The soft head spreads the liquid without the brush marks a bristle brush leaves, so the colour comes out smooth and streak free.

You use it for daubing dye onto a panel, working in small circles and overlapping the passes. Wool holds more liquid and gives a softer edge, while foam lays down a thinner, more controlled coat. Both are cheap enough to keep several on hand.

Dedicate a dauber to one colour. Once it has taken up a dye it is very hard to clean fully, and a contaminated pad will tint the next colour.

Safety

No sharp edge or chemical hazard is intrinsic to this item. Usual workshop care still applies — keep the bench clear and your hands behind the edge.

How to use it well

  • Work in small overlapping circles so the colour does not streak.
  • Keep one dauber per colour because they are hard to clean fully.
  • Do not overload the pad or the dye will pool and dry unevenly.
  • Use a fresh pad for finish so dye does not contaminate the top coat.

Dauber is suited to the following leather types. Anything outside this list is worth testing on an offcut first.
