Overview
A screw post is a two-part fastener, a threaded post and a slotted cap, that joins leather layers and can be taken apart again. Unlike a rivet, it is removable, which makes it useful for items that must be disassembled for cleaning or repair.
You punch a hole, pass the post through, and screw the cap on with a flat screwdriver. Because the joint can be undone, screw posts are common on journal covers, refillable notebooks and straps that may need to be replaced.
Choose the post length to suit the layer thickness, and check the thread engagement before trusting the joint with a load. Nickel plating resists tarnishing better than bare brass.
Safety
No sharp edge or chemical hazard is intrinsic to this item. Usual workshop care still applies — keep the bench clear and your hands behind the edge.
How to use it well
- Match the post length to the layer thickness so the cap seats fully.
- Check that the cap turns several full threads before loading the joint.
- Use a screwdriver that fits the slot so the cap is not chewed.
- Reinforce the leather around the post if the joint will be opened often.
Compatible leathers and materials
Screw Posts is suited to the following leather types. Anything outside this list is worth testing on an offcut first.
