Thread Length Calculator

Work out how much thread a seam needs, including the saddle stitch allowance.

This calculator estimates the thread needed for a hand-sewn seam. It combines the seam length, the stitch pitch, the leather thickness and the stitch style to give the total thread length with allowance, the stitch count, a time estimate and a recommended thread size.

stitches = seam / pitch; length = stitches x (2 x thickness + pitch) + 2 x allowance

Assumptions

  • The saddle stitch allowance assumes a thread about four times the seam length per pass.
  • Running stitch uses roughly half the thread of a saddle stitch; cross stitch uses slightly more.
  • Cut a little extra rather than splicing, since a knot in a seam will show and may fail.

How to use the result

Treat the number as a floor, not a target. Buy to the next sensible size up, and keep the offcuts — small pieces are what you learn on. Every figure here is an estimate based on typical workshop practice.

Chemicals. Dye and finish volumes are estimates only. Read the product safety data sheet before you open the tin, and work with ventilation and gloves.
