Overview
An edge clamp is a long, slim clamp that holds a glued seam closed while you work along it. Where a stitching pony holds the whole piece, an edge clamp keeps the layers registered so the holes stay aligned and the seam does not creep.
It is most useful on long straight seams such as belts, bag gussets and portfolio edges, where the layers want to shift as you handle them. The padded jaws close over the edge and leave the stitch line fully exposed.
Choose a clamp long enough to span a comfortable working section, with leather-faced jaws that grip without bruising the surface. Aluminium keeps the weight down on a long clamp.
Safety
No sharp edge or chemical hazard is intrinsic to this item. Usual workshop care still applies — keep the bench clear and your hands behind the edge.
How to use it well
- Glue the seam first and let it set before clamping to stitch.
- Slide the clamp along as you work so the stitched section is always free.
- Line up the chisel holes before clamping so the pitch stays even.
- Do not overtighten or the leather edge will take a permanent mark.
Compatible leathers and materials
Edge Clamp is suited to the following leather types. Anything outside this list is worth testing on an offcut first.
