Overview

A buckle is a frame with a prong that passes through a hole in a strap, holding it at an adjustable length. It is the classic belt closure and also appears on bag straps, harnesses and adjustable gear.

The buckle is fitted by folding the strap end around the centre bar and securing it with stitching or rivets. A roller on the centre bar reduces wear on the strap as it is pulled tight, which matters on a belt that is adjusted often.

Choose the inner width to match the strap, so the frame sits flat without pinching. Brass and nickel-plated steel are the common materials, and a heavy belt wants a heavier frame.

Safety

No sharp edge or chemical hazard is intrinsic to this item. Usual workshop care still applies — keep the bench clear and your hands behind the edge.

How to use it well

  • Match the inner width to the strap so the frame sits flat.
  • A roller bar reduces wear on a belt that is adjusted often.
  • Secure the folded strap with both stitching and a rivet on heavy belts.
  • Punch belt holes with a matching punch so the prong seats cleanly.
